Haruhi Suzumiya franchise / The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya / The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan / and finally, Ryoko Asakura

Ryoko Asakura, in the original Haruhi Suzumiya series is a Data Overmind Humanoid Interface, similar to that of Yuki Nagato. In it, she grows tired of waiting for a reaction to come from Haruhi Suzumiya for her to observe, and decides to kill the main character, and is destroyed herself by Yuki. In the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, she reappears as an anomoly, a normal human who sits in the seat occupied by the "disappeared" Haruhi Suzumiya, and takes care of Yuki by preparing her dinner, seeing her as someone who just can't be left alone. In the end, she sees the main character pointing a gun at Yuki, and stabs him in the back, seemingly killing him before he passes out and awakens back in the previous Asakura-free world.

So, with that in mind, Ryoko Asakura of the Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan!

In it, Ryoko is a childhood friend of Yuki, and with Yuki's parents absent and Ryoko's parents working abroad, she's over every single day to cook for her and to make sure she's not spending too much time playing video games and sleeping. As Yuki falls in love with Kyon, Ryoko is right behind her, doing her best to support her in her romantic conquest. While she's worried about the two growing too close too quickly, she puts that to the side for the sake of her friend's happiness. At the same time, helping her make chocolates and feeding them both. As their lives at that point are quiet and normal, they're introduced shortly to Kouyouen's Haruhi Suzumiya, who causes a lot of trouble and forces her way into the Literature Club (with Yuki's permission).

In their second year of high school, during their Christmas party, Yuki and Kyon finally confess to each other and start dating. It's kept hidden from Ryoko completely, but she finds out by overhearing Kyon talk about them dating. Having gotten advice on how to react by Haruhi, Ryoko stays quiet until the day that Kyon reveals his plan to tell her, wherein she decides to throw them a party. The current volume ends just after their upperclassmen graduate, and Ryoko is shown speaking to her mother, saying that she's made up her mind. She's moving to Canada.

Personality: Ryoko Asakura, at her very core, acts like a mother. She spends most of her time doting and fussing over Yuki, making food and doing chores while making sure she gets up for school on time. To that point, she also spends her time shopping, searching for deals between different grocers and being ecstatic upon finding one. She has a genuine interest in cooking, and enjoys the feeling of knowing her food is good. She can be very nurturing, providing advice for Yuki when she needs it and at the same time, stays firm, asking her to be realistic. In this respect, she also worries over Yuki often and can come across as overprotective. When she sees Yuki distressed and running past her a misunderstanding between Haruhi and Kyon, her mood drops and she lectures Haruhi angrily, soon after blaming herself for what's happened. Even further when Yuki is grazed by a car, she gets upset when she's told that it's okay and lightly considered forbidding her from leaving the house for a while, though common sense prevailed in that case.

Ryoko is the type to become passionate about something she's got an interest in, be it Yuki or oden, or even tutoring. When she chooses to tutor Kyon, she dresses up to suit the mood better and puts on an air of the "demon teacher", strict enough to keep him on task before spiraling into acting as the school's representative. It extends further into her maternal nature, when she starts cooking for Kyon for the sake of him changing his eating habits, she eventually starts pouring on more and more meat to help him grow to be stronger, immediately switching gears.

Her mom side also shows when she ropes herself into talking about how cute Yuki can be. Ryoko has a competitive side to herself, easily being set off when a situation arises to square off against one of her friends. Aside from the two separate occasions where she's competed against Tsuruya and Mikuru, there was also her being hyped up to be North High's representative to challenge Kouyouen's curriculum, in an failed attempt to prove that their school isn't as far behind a prep school as Kyon made it seem. The anime also gives an example of this when, despite lecturing the others on taking a short break to play cards, she forces the group into 24 rounds of Rich Man, Poor Man when she can't win even once.

That overprotective and competitive nature feeds into her being absolutely terrifying at certain points. Often when Kyon does something incredibly stupid, she tends to develop a seemingly murderous aura, a semi-carryover from the original Ryoko Asakura's chilling appearances. Most of the violence in the series is comedic (bumps on the head, Ryoko smooshing/pulling cheeks hard) though, so there aren't any actual murders that take place. Although, she does show off her skills with a knife early on, sending shivers down Kyon's spine. She even winds up joking at one point that one day she'll feel bored enough to relieve tension by sneaking up behind Kyon with a knife. So, there are a few callbacks that directly influence Ryoko's personality, though it's mostly played for jokes. The scary anger is about as close as she gets to murderous, and there hasn't been a single indication of her actually having that trait.

As the class representative, Ryoko generally stays polite and is patient when speaking to others outside of her group. She speaks in a nice tone, referring to everyone she knows with an honorific attached ( Nagato-san, Kyon-kun, etc. ). There are subjects she could be fairly overbearing on however: as Haruhi puts it, "You sure do get crazy when Yuki or oden are involved." She's certainly the type of person who would show off baby pictures if she had the chance, and as far as oden goes... well, she just really really likes preparing it, to the point where most of her favorite books are based around that subject. But usually, she makes a good attempt to be respectful to new people she meets, or to those like her upperclassmen. It's also inferred that a carry over from the original series is that she's good at being sociable to the rest of her class. It would be hard to imagine her as a class rep otherwise, of course.

She's generally got a helpful nature to herself as well, perhaps even to her own detriment. Most of the story revolves around her helping to push Yuki along to be more assertive and lead her to not need Ryoko to protect her. At the same time however, Ryoko didn't want things to change too much. A previous worry of hers had been that the closer Kyon and Yuki got to one another, the further they both got away from her, and she felt a pang of jealousy in that respect. Her inconsistent feelings towards their budding relationship would eventually go away, but would leave her still unsure of how to proceed, whether or not to ease up a little or push harder.

The world in Nagato Yuki-chan is completely normal, as opposed to the alien, time traveler, and esper laden world of the Suzumiya Haruhi series, and thus the most abnormal thing to occur is Yuki's "disappearance", her personality swapping momentarily to one similar to that of the main series' Yuki Nagato after getting hit by a car. It shows Ryoko's perception can be spot on from time to time, but moreso, her nervous feeling seeing Yuki with scratches all over her body and worry over the new personality. Still, she adjusted fairly quickly, doing her best to support the "Yuki Nagato" that was there before them. Essentially, when she's faced with something unknown, while there's a sense of worry within her, she makes the best of it and works hard to continue on.

Wish: "I want to know that Nagato-san will be happy without me protecting her."

Throughout the series, as Ryoko did her best to assist Yuki in building up a slightly assertive nature and working her way towards dating Kyon, she did feel a pang of loneliness in the idea, as she figured that the closer Yuki and Kyon got, the further away they'd move from her.

But as the recent volumes came up and Ryoko spoke to her mom about moving abroad, she had noticed that Yuki was in good hands with Kyon, and Kyon was doing his best to see to Yuki's development. Thus, she'd feel her presence would no longer truly be necessary in Yuki's life. Or at least, she'd think that, and still worry about it. As far as we've seen, nobody else has alluded to knowing about, nor has she mentioned moving to Canada to anyone else. It's also not truly been said when she's going for that matter.

So, her wish would be granted. Ryoko would leave Nishinomiya for Nyoi-cho. As far as her knowing whether or not Yuki is happy and safe without her, she'll have visions in her dreams of daily life progressing at North High, without her. Whether it's happy (or genuine) would remain to be seen.

Passive ability: Bred from Ryoko's wish, her passive ability would center around the need to protect whoever she's with. Subconsciously, depending on the level at which Ryoko feels that it's up to her to keep someone safe, she'll receive a boost in speed and attack power, but will be more likely to leave herself open for an attack. In RPG terms, ATK and SPD go up, but DEF goes down.

Being that it is subconscious and not a switch she would be able to flip herself, most of it will depend on her relationship to the other person. An acquaintance would see a minuscule bump, and a friend would see a smallish-medium bump. For that matter, someone she sees close to, if not on the level of Yuki Nagato will see her with a much larger reaction than the other two. Of course, this comes at a heavy price: the more time she spends feeling like she needs to keep them safe, the more she'll burn away at her Soul Gem's purity.

Active ability: Ryoko's active ability is similar to one that she might have had in another lifetime. She gains the ability to create a circular space with an 8 ft. radius around her, initially acting as a healing bubble that'll protect her and whoever she's close to from mild attacks. It only heals the person she's with however, while it'll protect Ryoko, she's completely unable to patch herself up with it. The ability can last ten seconds, before it starts to take a physical toll on her.

This is of course, the base state of this space. In addition to its radius expanding, eventually it'll act as a way for Ryoko to figure out further ways to protect those she's with, be it strengthening the shield/healing properties, or working out something on the offensive and momentarily buffing her weapon if she can catch the familiar inside of it. As a result, no matter what magic she discovers in her time in Nyoi-cho that comes out of being in her closed space, it'll be less effective and (and some of it non-functioning) if she's the only magi within.

Weapon: A rather sharp looking knife.

Sample: She didn't know what to make of it. It was hard for her to even parse that this world could even be real, and yet she knew at this point that rejecting it would only cause her strife soon enough.

Ryoko rested against a nearby building, examining it up and down to make sure it wasn't alive or host to one of the familiars that she had been avoiding. As she gripped onto the soul gem that she had been granted, she tried her hardest not to throw it. What was she thinking?! The wish she had made... was it really worth this? It was as if that thing... Kyuubey, as if he had taken "protecting her" a lot more literally than she thought. She wasn't a soldier or an esper or anything. Why was this happening?

Her lamentation ended abruptly as a familiar stalked her from nearby, the creaking sound erupting from it's grotesque mouth attracting more to her position. Ryoko backed away momentarily, heart pounding out of her chest. Form a contract. Become a magi. Could she really do this?

No. It wasn't really a question at this juncture. She'd made her wish, she'd made her promise. If she can't protect herself, how would she be able to ever meet Nagato-san again? It was ridiculous and she didn't know what prompted her to accept, but there was no choice anymore. Ryoko held her soul gem close to her, and found herself enveloped in an iridescent light. It was hard to explain it, but as the light dissipated, she felt a confidence build within her that hadn't been there since her arrival.

As the light faded, the familiar pounced... and Ryoko immediately took action, as if it were natural to her. Her movements quick, with a flick of her wrist the sharp weapon materialized in her hand and a few deft movements were all it took before the familiar scattered into dust. Her senses kicked in, and she dashed backward, yet she stood her ground confidently. If she had sleeves, this would be the point where she'd roll them up.

A self-confident grin. Ryoko Asakura figured she'd have trouble adjusting, but one step at a time... and this suddenly, didn't feel as scary as it just was.

"This much should be a good start... so let's see what else I can do. I'll accept your challenge!" Whether she was talking to the rest of the Nightmarescape or Kyuubey, it didn't matter. She wasn't going to lose here.
